Beatriz García-Torres Robles (Universität Granada) ‚Purification Courts: Suspect Citizens in New Granada (1816-1819)‘
This paper examines how regime change transforms the logic of suspicion, taking the Tribunales de Purificación in Nueva Granada as a case study. Established following the arrival of Pablo Morillo and the restoration of Spanish rule, these tribunals required New Granadans to prove their loyalty to the Crown during the revolutionary period. Their analysis reveals how suspicion, previously directed at specific subjects such as strangers or foreigners, came to extend across the population as a whole.
