Database on households and the family in the Balkans

The basis for the establishment of the database on household and family in the Balkans constitutes the Halpern Collection, which contains the data for some 115,000 persons. This data is based on population censuses, church and tax registers from the 19th and 20th centuries and includes all the former Yugoslav republics. Serb settlements predominate, however, due to Prof. Halpern's research focus.

The collection has been extended in recent years within the framework of several research projects, and the inclusion of some 140,000 people from Albania has opened up a further Southeast European country to quantitative studies on household and the family and to demographic research.

Today some 215,000 people from Southeastern Europe are recorded in the database, which will be augmented by data from other countries of the region in the future. This data is available in SPSS-format in a German and an English version.
