Hanna Stein is project assistant (PhD) at the Southeast European History and Anthropology at the Institute of History of the University of Graz. Her research topic is Unknown Pictures – Amateur Films as Historical Sources and New Perspectives on Everyday Life in Socialist Yugoslavia.
Curriculum Vitae
Hanna Stein (*1989) holds a Bachelor degree in European Studies and Cultural Sciences and two master degrees in Southeastern European Studies and Interdisciplinary Gender Studies. She studied in Chemnitz (GER), Graz (AUS) and Zagreb (HR). Between 2016 and 2018, she was student assistant at the Southeast European History and Anthropology where she continues her research on amateur films from Yugoslavia in the framework of a dissertation.
Her academic works find representation in interdisciplinary research and art projects, film projections and exhibitions as well. Thereby, Hanna Stein aims at creating an interface of scientific, artistic worlds and spheres of everyday life.

„Unknown Pictures – Amateur Films as Historical Sources and New Perspectives on Everyday Life in Socialist Yugoslavia“
The dissertation project aims at researching amateur films in two ways. On one hand, it focuses on the development of a methodological approach to amateur films as sources within historiography, which can lead to valuable and diverse micro perspectives as well as to new findings. On the other hand, the methodological reflection shall be used as a possibility to work with the widely unknown productions of Yugoslav amateur film makers as empirical material to extract perspectives on the everyday life, thus establishing amateur films as historical sources. To answer the research questions and to develop a methodology for using amateur films, an interdisciplinary approach is used by which historical film analysis and mapping methods (based on situational analysis) are being merged.
