Siegfried Gruber is researcher at the Institute of History/Southeast European History and Anthropology.

He began studying History and European Ethnology at the University of Graz in 1988 and after graduating in 1995, he went on to receive his doctorate in 2004. Since 1993, he has been engaged in several research projects as a researcher (third-party-funded). In 2008 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Saale) und from 2009 to 2014 at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. In Rostock he participated in developing the research database Mosaic (www.censusmosaic.org).
Areas of Research and Training:
Family history and historical demography in Serbia in the 19th century and in Albania at the beginning of the 20th century; Household structures in Europe, especially in geographic terms; Comparative research of complex household structures; Quantitative research of patriarchal structures; Urban households during the era of industrialisation; Ageing Research.
Current Research:
"The demographic situation in Albania around 1900"
The analyses of this research project funded by the Austrian National Bank (Oesterreichischen Nationalbank, Anniversary Fund) are based upon the population census of 1918 and church records from Northern Albania. The analysis will deal with the characteristics of the population, marriage patterns, fertility, occupational and marriage migration, and finally household structures.
