Andrea Strutz researches the history of migrations from Austria to Canada with a special focus on Jewish immigration. She is currently working on a project on flight and expulsion from Nazi Germany to Canada and the survival of refugees after the Second World War in Canada or elsewhere, such as in the USA or in Israel.
Since 1992, Andrea Strutz has been an academic staff member in numerous research and exhibition projects at the Institute of History of the University of Graz and at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Social and Cultural History (2001−2017). She conducted her core research on Nazi expulsion and remembrance, National Socialism and “reparations”, media history or the use of oral and video history: “Widerstand und Verfolgung in der Steiermark von 1934–1945” (Resistance and persecution in Styria from 1934–1945; 1992–1996); "Emigration Austria – New York" (Video History Project, 1996–1997); Geschichtswerkstatt Graz ‘97 (History Workshop Graz ‘97): “Der Krieg geht uns alle an. Wie gehen wir damit um?” (The war affects us all. How do we deal with it? 1997); “Kunst, Wissenschaft und Kommunikation” (Art, science and communication; state exhibition Styria comm.gr2000az, 1998–2000); “60 Jahre Anschluss” (60 Years of Anschluss; exhibition, 1997–1998); “Von Graz nach Kanada” (From Graz to Canada; Video History Project, 2001−2002); “Transformationen gesellschaftlicher Erinnerung. Interdisziplinäre Forschungen zur österreichischen Gedächtnisgeschichte in der Zweiten Republik” (Transformations of social memory. Interdisciplinary research on Austrian memory history in the Second Republic; sub-project: “Erinnerungen aus der Ferne” (Memories from afar), 2000−2002); “’Wiedergutmachung’ in Österreich am Beispiel der Opferfürsorge in der Steiermark” (‘Reparations’ in Austria using the example of victim welfare in Styria; 2000−2003); “A Framework for Socio-Economic Development in Europe? The Consensual Political Cultures of the Small West European States in Comparative and Historical Perspective” (2003−2006, EU project); “Nach Amerika nämlich!" Jüdische Migrationen in die Amerikas im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert” (To America! Jewish migrations to the Americas in the 19th and 20th centuries; 2011); “Studien zur österreichischen Migration nach Kanada von 1890 bis in die 1960er Jahre” (Studies on Austrian migration to Canada from 1890 to the 1960s; habilitation project, 2009−2014).
For several years, she has been cooperating with the Austrian Media Center at the Technical Museum in Vienna for the oral history project “MenschenLeben. Lebensgeschichtliche Interviews in Österreich” (HumanLifes. Biographical interviews in Austria) and is responsible for the project coordination in southern Austria.
Since 2015, Andrea Strutz has been working on the conception and creation of a series of textbooks for the teaching subject history and political education (secondary level I) for ÖBV – Österreichischer Bundesverlag Schulbuch publishing called “querdenken – Schulbuch Geschichte und politische Bildung”.
Since July 2017, she has been a key researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on Consequences of War and is responsible for the programme line on migration; the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Social and Cultural History was closed in June 2017.
Since 1993, she has been a lecturer at the Institute of History of the University of Graz and served as a member of the faculty for the doctoral programme “Migration – Diversity – Global Societies”. Furthermore, she teaches courses in Canadian Studies at the Institute of Romance Studies. Further teaching experience: University of Klagenfurt (University Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, 2016); Johannes Kepler University Linz (Institute of Modern and Contemporary History, 2015); visiting professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), USA (1997).
Andrea Strutz is Network Chair of the Oral History and Life Stories Network of the European Social Science History Conference (ESSHC) and spokesperson and head of the Society for Canadian Studies (GKS)’s history section.
Research core areas: historical migration research; flight, expulsion and exile; transnational history of migration, memory and gender; National Socialism and "reparations"; Jewish History; history of memory and remembrance; biographical research; theory and practice of oral and video history.
